Quantum Optics Experiments with Single Photons for Undergraduate Laboratories

چکیده
We present new results of interference experiments for undergraduates that underscore the quantum nature of the light. The experiments use parametric down-conversion to generate pairs of correlated photons. The experiments involve oneand two-photon interference schemes that rely on first and second-order coherence effects. They can be used as a complement to teaching quantum mechanics or quantum optics. ©2007 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (000.2060) Education, (270.0270) Quantum optics.

Undergraduate Laboratories Using Correlated Photons: Experiments on the Fundamentals of Quantum Mechanics
Innovative Laboratory Design 1 1 3 Advances in several technologies have created an educational opportunity for curricular innovation in physics. Experiments with correlated photons can be used in the upper-level physics curriculum to complement the teaching of an otherwise theoretical topic: quantum mechanics. Undergraduates can now recreate, on a tabletop setup, experiments with correlated ph...
متن کاملInvestigating and improving student understanding of quantum mechanics in the context of single photon interference
Single photon experiments involving a Mach-Zehnder interferometer can illustrate the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics, e.g., the wave-particle duality of a single photon, single photon interference, and the probabilistic nature of quantum measurement involving single photons. These experiments explicitly make the connection between the abstract quantum theory and concrete laboratory ...
متن کاملDynamical evolution of nonclassical properties in cavity quantum electrodynamics with a single trapped ion
In this paper, by considering a system consisting of a single two-level trapped ion interacting with a single-mode quantized radiation field inside a lossless cavity, the temporal evolution of the ionic and the cavity-field quantum statistical properties including photon-counting statistics, quantum fluctuations of the field quadratures and quantum fluctuations of the ionic dipole variables are...
متن کاملA Non-Demolition Photon Counting Method by Four-Level Inverted Y-Type Atom
The semi-classical model of atom-field interaction has been fully studied for some multilevel atoms, e.g. Vee, L, Cascade X , Y, and inverted Y and so on. This issue is developed into the full-quantum electrodynamics formalism, where the probe and coupling electromagnetic fields are quantized. In this article, we investigate the full-quantum model of absorption and dispersion spectrum of trappe...
متن کاملEngineered optical nonlinearity for quantum light sources.
Many applications in optical quantum information processing benefit from careful spectral shaping of single-photon wave-packets. In this paper we tailor the joint spectral wave-function of photons created in parametric downconversion by engineering the nonlinearity profile of a poled crystal. We designed a crystal with an approximately Gaussian nonlinearity profile and confirmed successful wave...
